Box Score WAYNE, N.J. – Third-seeded Rowan (34-10, 14-4 NJAC) captured the 2014 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball title after defeating fourth-seeded Kean (32-11, 14-4 NJAC), 7-0, in Game 11 of the tournament May 4.
Back-to-back homers gave the 22nd-ranked Profs a 2-0 lead during the top of the first. After the first two batters were quickly retired, sophomore designated player Ashley DeYoung lifted a solo home run over the right-center field fence, and junior second baseman Alysa Romero followed by crushing the ball over the right field wall.
Rowan added to its lead in the third. Arcella and DeYoung started the inning with walks and advanced to second and third on a ground out. With two down, senior catcher Meagan Lee sent a two-run single to center field, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Profs threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Junior pitcher Rebecca Rotola got DeYoung to hit a comebacker to the mound and started a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
A sacrifice fly from sophomore shortstop Shilah Snead extended Rowan's lead to 5-0. After Arcella was hit by a pitch, Romero blasted her second home run of the game over the left-field fence to bring the score to 7-0 after six.
Senior Krysti Maronski retired the Cougar batters in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory and the championship for Rowan.
Romero went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Lee collected two hits and drove in two runs. Maronski (20-5) earned the win, allowing just two hits and striking out eight in the complete-game effort.
Freshman second baseman Emily Sabo and senior catcher Jill Martin recorded Kean's two hits. Yard (20-8) picked up the loss, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out four and walking two in 2.2 innings. Junior Rebecca Rotola allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out one batter in 3.1 innings of relief.
