Box Score Video Highlights WAYNE, N.J. – The top-seeded and 17th-ranked William Paterson softball team (30-9, 15-3 NJAC) was eliminated by third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Rowan (32-10, 13-5 NJAC) in Game 8 of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament, 4-1, May 3.
The Profs advance to play in Game 10 of the NJAC Tournament Sunday, May 4, at 11:00 a.m. against a team to be determined.
Junior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) got the Pioneer offense started when she blasted a 3-1 pitch over the left-field fence for a solo home run, giving WP a 1-0 lead two batters into the contest. Senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) followed with a triple to right-center field, but was later thrown out at the plate trying to advance on a grounder hit to shortstop Shilah Snead.
The Profs exploded for four runs during the bottom half of the frame. With one out, senior left fielder Jennifer Arcella was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an Ashley DeYoung single through the left side. Three doubles from junior second baseman Alysa Romero, senior catcher Meagan Lee and junior third baseman Jessica Phillips during a four at-bat stretch gave Rowan a 4-1 lead.
The Pioneers put the leadoff batter on first base during the second, third, fourth and fifth innings but was only able to advance a runner to second base once after the first frame. WP freshman pitcher
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) held Rowan to just two hits during the final 5.0 innings.
The Pioneers collected six hits from six different players. Freshman
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) fell to 9-6, giving up four runs on three hits in 0.2 inning. Castelli allowed three hits while walking two and striking out five in 5.1 innings of relief.
Romero was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Lee drove in two runs for the Profs. Krysti Maronski (19-5) earned the win, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
